A pop psychology soft science look about reaching flow state
The author researched how people enter a fully-focused “flow” state, how to experience this mind-body connection, how to reach this and in what contexts, discusses the benefits/downsides, reflects upon happiness and focus.
Flow is achieved when one pushes themselves to their limit, either creativiely, athletically, or some other way that pushes their mind or body to achieve something greater than themself.
Ultimately, there is more we don't know about flow state than we do. You can't really guarantee it, or describe it, but if you've ever achieved it you know what it's about. For example, I have reached a flow state while surfing, when riding a wave that's larger than I've ridden before. Or while coding. Or writing. Running. Singing/Performing. Playing guitar. Producing a podcast show. It's when experience meets your current activity and you are pushing yourself to get better.
To be in flow often you must find meaning and purpose in your life. Find ways that benefit both you and the people around you. Do things from intrinsic motivation, not because you are expected to do it, because you may not achieve full-focus and will second guess yourself.
